Korea, Here We Come! (Sort of)

A few weeks ago, our residents experienced a special treat in Victorian Hall, a interesting presentation that took us around the world, all from the comfort of our chairs. Our visitors wore gowns of another time, had paper mache candle holders and large photographs of foreign locales. Also on display was a large Buddha, and stacks of books all related to one country: Korea.

The program, presented by the Korean Spiritual and Cultural Project, began with words of welcome and a description of our “travel” itinerary. Then came a video about Korean history.

After an intermission, a second video brought the audience up to date with Korean accomplishments and progress in modern times and a traditional desert. The costumed ladies passed out Korean snacks to the seated guests, and small plastic bags filled with additional goodies.

As the evening closed, the head of the presenting group reminded the audience that the books on display were their gift to Westchester Meadows. Each young lady in the group wore a similar style in different, vibrant colors. The style featured high necklines and long sleeves combined with a floor length skirt in a blending color that ballooned gracefully as the wearer moved. A few generations ago this was the standard style, but is now reserved for special occasions, like the one we were all treated to.

Resident Council President Reaches out to Legislators

At the beginning of the month, the legislation authorizing New York Continuing Care Retirement Communities to offer fee-for-service contracts rested in the officer of Governor Andrew Cuomo, awaiting his signature to make it officially the law of the state.

Some residents, including Resident Council President Carl Winterrose, took the time to write to State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins urging her to support the legislation. She was, as you might imagine, supportive. Similarly, there were some more residents who wrote to Governor himself. A form letter response was received by those who wrote that the Governor had their communication and that it would be “read and shared with the appropriate members of my staff.”

The importance of this legislation to Westchester Meadows is significant. It is viewed as the best chance currently available to break the stalemate in the populating of CCRCs caused by the economic downturn and the difficult prospective residents have when trying to sell their homes.

Time out with “The Tree of Life”

On Wednesday, June 29th, some of us took the afternoon to visit the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y., for the presentation of “The Tree of Life.” Debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the latest movie from acclaimed Director Terrence Malick follows the life of a man who imagines living his life over in a small Texas town.

A number of our residents joined us, prompting discussion on life’s twists and turns, and the lessons we learn along the way. The trip was made in place of a stroll with Carolyn at Kingsland Point Park. Stay tuned to see when that outing is rescheduled.

Warm Weather Precautions

While we have all been anxiously awaiting the return of warm weather, there is plenty that both our residents and staffers can do to make sure we all enjoy the summer months in a safe and healthy way.

As we head toward the Fourth of July, many of us are eager to spend some time outside. The chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine is something to which everyone looks forward, but we must all remember that special precautions come with these outdoor activities. Here are some safety tips for those who don’t want to be slowed down now that the weather is in our favor:

• Stay Hydrated: One of the biggest dangers for anyone spending time out in the sun is forgetting to drink enough fluids. It’s often difficult to tell right away when you’re becoming dehydrated, so make sure you have something to drink close at hand. Remember, water is best!

• Dress Appropriately: We make such an effort to ensure we bundle up in the winter, but we should never forget it’s important to wear the right clothes during the warmer months, as well. Light, loose-fitting clothing is best when it comes to keeping cool.

• Come Prepared: Sunglasses, sun screen, and a hat to keep the sun off of your head can go a long way to keeping you cool and safe from any harmful rays.

• Know Your Limits: The sun is most dangerous during the middle part of the day. While it feels good to be out in the sunshine, remember to find some shade when the sun is highest in the sky.

• Take a Break: There may be days when we all want to be outside, but it is just too hot for us to stay out there all day long. If you are feeling too warm or need to get a drink, take a break from the outdoors and come inside to rest where its cool!

If we all do our part to watch out for each other, everyone can enjoy the warm weather that has returned. By staying healthy and safe, we make sure we can take advantage of all the summer months have to offer.
